Molecular 'Scissors' Work in Response to Light

TOKYO, March 26, 2007 -- A pair of molecular-scale "scissors" has been developed that open and close in response to wavelengths of light, representing the first example of a molecular machine capable of mechanically manipulating molecules through light energy, its creators said.     Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
