1st Light is Big Step for UF

GAINESVILLE, Fla., July 13, 2007 -- The opening of the world’s largest telescope will usher the University of Florida (UF) into the top ranks of the “big observers,” said one astronomy professor.  A “first light” opening ceremony of the Gran Telescopio Canarias, or GTC -- under construction in Spain’s Canary Islands for the past seven years -- is being held today.
