Laser Energetics Completes Laser Study

Princeton, N.J.-based Laser Energetics Inc. (LEI), a maker of lasers for industrial, scientific, medical and military applications, announced yesterday that it has completed a study on its BrightStar Alexandrite laser, funded by an undisclosed defense company for $25,000. The study compared 18 lasers from various manufacturers for a military remote-sensing laser application; LEI said its laser placed in the top three. The tunable, solid-state Alexandrite lasers, which incorporate a DP Nd:YAG laser pump as the excitation source, can be used on the battlefield for the detection of chemical and...Read full article

    Glossary
    alexandrite
A host crystal for chromium that emits pulsed or continuous-wave laser light, tunable from about 720 to 790 nm.
    excitation
    1. The process by which an atom acquires energy sufficient to raise it to a quantum state higher than its ground state. 2. More specifically with respect to lasers, the process by which the material in the laser cavity is stimulated by light or other means, so that atoms are converted to a semistable state, initiating the lasing process.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    remote sensing
Remote sensing is a method of data collection and observation where information about objects, areas, or phenomena on Earth's surface is gathered from a distance, typically using sensors onboard satellites, aircraft, drones, or other platforms. This technique enables the monitoring and analysis of Earth's surface and atmosphere without direct physical contact. Remote sensing systems capture electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light, infrared, microwave, or radio waves) reflected or...
