QPC Lasers Awarded Laser Diode Patent

QPC Lasers Inc., a Sylmar, Calif., maker of semiconductor lasers for industrial, defense, display and medical markets, was recently granted US Patent No. 7269195, “Laser Diode With an Amplification Section That has a Varying Index of Refraction," for a method to prevent the "self-focusing" (or defocusing) nonlinear optical phenomena, which can cause laser diodes to produce weak beams when operated at high power. QPC also announced it has added eight executives to its European, Asian and North American-based sales teams and in-house marketing team.Read full article

    nonlinear optics
Nonlinear optics is a branch of optics that studies the optical phenomena that occur when intense light interacts with a material and induces nonlinear responses. In contrast to linear optics, where the response of a material is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, nonlinear optics involves optical effects that are not linearly dependent on the input light intensity. These nonlinear effects become significant at high light intensities, such as those produced by...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
