STANFORD, Calif., May 19, 2008 -- What was once considered more theoretical than practical, computers based on the powerful properties of quantum mechanics now have the potential to revolutionize information technology and security. Engineers and physicists from Stanford and the University of California-Santa Barbara have demonstrated a progenitor of an essential component of quantum computers, a logic gate, which enables interaction between just two particles of light.
