Part of the “LED Application” series, the technology fact sheet “Dimming LEDs” provides an overview of the dimming technology and discusses its prospects in residential applications. Available from the US Department of Energy (DoE), the downloadable publication notes that, in theory, LEDs are fully dimmable but that they are not compatible with all dimmer controls designed for incandescent lamps. It describes how manufacturers are working to solve the compatibility problem, and it addresses matters such as flicker, and changes in color and efficacy with dimming. It concludes that the dimmability of LEDs will be limited by the installed stock of dimmers in the short term and that new designs are likely to emerge.
