GAINESVILLE and MELBOURNE, Fla., July 17, 2008 -- According to the National Weather Service, an average of 62 people are killed each year by lightning in the United States. In a single week this July, which typically is peak lightning season, five young lives were claimed across the country. With the hope of better understanding the movement of lightning for this very reason, a group of engineering researchers from the University of Florida (UF) and Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) have narrowed the search for the source of x-rays emitted by lightening, a discovery that could one day help predict where lightning will strike.
