WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug. 27, 2008 – Passing its first orbital checkpoint with flying colors, NASA’s Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) has revealed an entire gamma-ray sky. More than two months ago, NASA launched the GLAST with the hope of exploring the universe in high-energy gamma rays, which are the highest-energy form of light and are spectacularly different than what we can visualize with our own eyes. NASA also announced that their new observatory has officially been renamed the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The name honors Professor Enrico Fermi (1901-1954), a pioneer in high energy physics. This...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
