PV Power Boosted by 50%

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 25, 2008 -- New ways of squeezing out greater efficiency from solar photovoltaic (PV) cells are emerging from computer simulations and lab tests conducted by a team of physicists and engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Using computer modeling and a variety of advanced chip-manufacturing techniques, they have applied an antireflection coating to the front, and a novel combination of multi-layered reflective coatings and a tightly spaced array of lines, called a diffraction grating, to the backs of ultrathin silicon films to boost the cells' output by as much as 50 percent. The...Read full article

    diffraction grating
A diffraction grating is an optical component consisting of a surface with a periodic structure of equally spaced, parallel grooves or rulings. These rulings act as an array of closely spaced slits or reflective elements that cause incoming light to diffract or spread out into its component wavelengths. When monochromatic light (light of a single wavelength) illuminates a diffraction grating, the grooves cause the light to interfere constructively and destructively, resulting in a pattern...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
