Blue Light Zaps Infection

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, Feb. 5, 2009 – Blue light can destroy antibiotic-resistant staph infection (Staphylococcus Aureus), according to a recently published paper. Two common strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, commonly known as MRSA, were virtually eradicated in the laboratory by exposing them to a wavelength of blue light, in a process called photo-irradiation. Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections represent an important and increasing public health threat. At present, fewer than 5 percent of staph strains are susceptible to penicillin, while approximately 40-50 percent of staph infections isolated...Read full article

The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
