Tiny Lasers Plug ‘Green Gap’

TAMPERE, Finland, May 5, 2009 – Digital projectors use a variety of technologies to throw an image on to a screen. However, existing projectors are bulky and there is a growing commercial interest in using new laser technology to make a projector small enough to build into a laptop computer or even a mobile phone. Now, compact lasers can work in what were formerly inaccessible parts of the spectrum and are suitable for mass production, thanks to pioneering work by a European consortium. “Such devices would have extremely high market potential,” said Mircea Guina of Tampere University’s Optoelectronics Research...Read full article

    Glossary
    optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
    photodynamic therapy
A medical technology that uses lasers or other light sources in combination with photosensitizing drugs to treat cancerous tumors.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    solid-state laser
A solid-state laser is a type of laser that uses a solid gain medium (as opposed to a liquid or gas) to produce coherent light. The term "solid-state" refers to the fact that the active medium, where the lasing action occurs, is a solid material. This material is typically a crystalline or glass-like substance doped with specific ions or atoms that can undergo stimulated emission to generate laser light. The basic components of a solid-state laser include: Gain medium: This is the solid...
