Light Turned into Electrical Current

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 22, 2010 – Using a golden nanoscale system, material scientists at the Nano/Bio Interface Center of the University of Pennsylvania are now turning light into electrical currents. The system, an array of nano-sized molecules of gold, responds to electromagnetic waves by creating surface plasmons that induce and project electrical current across molecules, similar to that of photovoltaic solar cells. The results may provide a technological approach for higher efficiency energy harvesting with a nano-sized circuit that can power itself, potentially through...Read full article

    light
Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
