Health care experts gave US legislators a healthy dose of information on biophotonics last month when SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, held a luncheon briefing in Washington for members of the US House of Representatives’ R&D Caucus. Research and development leaders from SPIE described for the legislators ways in which innovation can be supported and sped up through government action, focusing on biophotonics, bioimaging and nanomedicine and on what light-based technologies can do to spur breakthroughs in health care. The need for funding for...Read full article

    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale.
