LLNL Mirrors Used for Solar Mission

LIVERMORE, Calif., March 15, 2010 — A technology originally developed to make computer chips smaller, faster and more powerful is now being used in space to take images of the sun every 10 seconds with 10 times better resolution than high-definition television. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) -developed extreme ultraviolet (EUV) multilayer mirrors are part of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), which is one of three instruments on board NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft. Launched in mid-February, the SDO’s mission is to evaluate the complex mechanisms of the sun and is...Read full article

    Glossary
    extreme ultraviolet
Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) refers to a specific range of electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. EUV radiation has wavelengths between 10 and 124 nanometers, which corresponds to frequencies in the range of approximately 2.5 petahertz to 30 exahertz. This range is shorter in wavelength and higher in frequency compared to the far-ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet regions. Key points about EUV include: Source: EUV radiation is produced by extremely hot and energized...
