When Molecules Leave Tire Tracks

MUNICH, Germany, March 18, 2010 – The ability that some molecules have to arrange themselves into patterns on surfaces is crucial for many technological applications. However, it has been virtually impossible to predict or control the result of such self-organization. Now, a group of researchers led by Bianca Hermann of the Center for Nanoscience at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, reports it has been able to formulate a simple model that can predict the patterns observed. “With the help of the model, we can generate a wide variety of patterns that reproduce surprisingly well the arrangements observed...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    sensor
    1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
