Dark Matter Measures Age of Universe

DAVIS, Calif., March 23, 2010 — Astronomers from the United States and Europe have used a gravitational lens – a distant, light-bending clump of dark matter – to make a new estimate of the Hubble constant, which determines the size and age of the universe. The Hubble constant previously has been calculated by using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to look at distant supernovae, and by measurements of the cosmic microwave background –radiation leftover from the Big Bang, according to Chris Fassnacht, associate professor of physics at the University of California, Davis. The new method provides an...Read full article

    gravitational lens
The effect of a powerful gravitational field on light traveling through the field. This effect is detectable in astronomical observations when light from a distant source passes a massive object before reaching an observer. When the source of the light is behind the massive object, the gravitational lens results in a ringlike formation of light.
