Measurement of centering errors, automated adjustment and mounting of lenses

Josef Heinisch, Trioptics GmbH

Classical optical measurement techniques combined with modern PC technology provide accurate alignment, bonding and cementing of optical components and systems. These processes are fully automated and significantly reduce production time and cost. The processes involved in manufacturing optical lenses – grinding, polishing and coating – have become increasingly automated in the past few decades. Computer numerical controlled grinding and polishing machines, as well as computer-controlled interferometers for the examination of the surface profile, are in widespread use. ...Read full article

    Glossary
    antireflection coating
An antireflection coating (AR coating) is a thin film or coating applied to optical surfaces, such as lenses or windows, to minimize unwanted reflections and increase the transmission of light through the surface. These coatings are designed to reduce both specular (mirror-like) and diffuse (scattered) reflections, thereby improving the efficiency and performance of optical systems. antireflection coating suppliers → The primary function of an AR coating is to reduce the amount...
    autocollimation
Technique of projecting an illuminated target at infinity and receiving the target image after reflection from a flat mirror surface.
    axis
A straight line, real or imaginary, passing through a body and indicating its center; a line so positioned that various portions of an object are located symmetrically in relation to the line. See also optical axis.
    azimuth angle
    1. In astronomy, the angle measured clockwise (eastward) in a horizontal plane, usually from north (true north, Y-north, grid north or magnetic north). 2. With relation to the plane-polarized light incident on the surface of a dielectric, it is the angle measured between the normal to the incident plane and the plane of vibration. This term applies to refracted, reflected and incident light rays.
    ccd camera
A CCD camera, or charge-coupled device camera, is a type of digital camera that utilizes a CCD image sensor to capture and record images. CCD cameras are widely used in various applications, including digital photography, scientific imaging, surveillance, and machine vision. CCD camera suppliers → The key components of a CCD camera include: CCD image sensor: The heart of a CCD camera is the CCD image sensor, which is a semiconductor device consisting of an array of...
    center thickness
The lens thickness measured at the optical axis.
    curvature
The measure of departure from a flat surface, as applied to lenses; the reciprocal of radius. Applies to any surface, including lenses, mirrors and image surfaces.
    grinding
The process in the manufacture of an optical system that gives it the required geometric shape.
    illumination
The general term for the application of light to a subject. It should not be used in place of the specific quantity illuminance.
    mount
See gimbal mount; kinematic mount; lens mount.
    near-infrared
The shortest wavelengths of the infrared region, nominally 0.75 to 3 µm.
    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    optical surface
A reflecting or refracting surface contained within an optical system.
    polishing
The optical process, following grinding, that puts a highly finished, smooth and apparently amorphous surface on a lens or a mirror.
    sensor
    1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
    ultraviolet
That invisible region of the spectrum just beyond the violet end of the visible region. Wavelengths range from 1 to 400 nm.
    vertex
The point of intersection of the optical axis with any centered optical surface.
