“Greening” Your Flat-Screen TV

TEL AVIV, Israel, Sept. 7, 2010 — Researchers at Tel Aviv University developed an environmentally friendly organic LED light source for home electronics, medicine and clean energy. The new light source applies a discovery in nanotechnology based on self-assembled peptide nanotubes to "greening" the optics and electronics industry. Nadav Amdursky, a doctoral student, and Gil Rosenman, a professor in the university’s department of electrical engineering, say their technology could make flat-screen TV production “green” and could even make medical equipment — such as subcutaneous ultrasound devices...Read full article

    Glossary
    electronics
That branch of science involved in the study and utilization of the motion, emissions and behaviors of currents of electrical energy flowing through gases, vacuums, semiconductors and conductors, not to be confused with electrics, which deals primarily with the conduction of large currents of electricity through metals.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
