I've mentioned India's well-known Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JN-NSM) on several occasions on this blog. During the Solarcon India 2010 event in Hyderabad this July, Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI had said: “India has a bright future in solar PV and other renewable energies. India should also acquire and develop the best research. The NSM is the change in India. You try to look for simplicity, see what’s going on, and speed. We hope that happens in India.” These words seem to have gone down very well with the government of India, which is currently hosting the Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference (DIREC) 2010 from October 27 to 29, 2010, on the theme of “Up-scaling and Mainstreaming Renewables for Energy Security, Climate Change and Economic Development.” The show is being held at the India Expo Center & Mart, Greater Noida, National Capital Region of Delhi, India. DIREC 2010 is the fourth in the series of global ministerial-level Conferences on Renewable Energy, which follows from the initiative taken at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, acknowledging the significance of renewable energy for sustainable development. With more than 9,000 delegates, over 250 speakers and 600 exhibitors from 50 countries, DIREC is expected to be the most significant event on renewable energy ever held in India. DIREC 2010 is definitely a not-to-be missed event for those folks looking to invest in the solar PV segment in India. Norway and Germany are the partner countries to this show. There are several mouthwatering sessions one should attend. Some of these on day one are: Vision 2020: Role of Renewables for energy security, climate change, and economic development. A ministerial-level discussion, followed by multistakeholder discussion, as well as a CEO roundtable are among the next sessions that would offer much to the audience. One other session is by the EPIA & Greenpeace International, titled Solar Generation - A Global Photovoltaic Market Outlook until 2050. Day 2 has multiple tracks on technology and infrastructure, policy and finance. I expect that the sessions on finance and policy will be jam-packed, going by what one witnessed during Solarcon India 2010. Subsessions on supporting policies for off-grid should be a top draw, as should be the session on financing for small businesses and end-users. On the last day, the plenary will report key findings from all sessions. Pradeep
