Lancaster Award to Aid Photonics Research

LANCASTER, England, April 12, 2011 — Lancaster University was awarded €500,000 ($721,647 USD) as part of a European program to encourage the next generation of photonics research. The €4.8 million program, Postgraduate Research on Photonics as an Enabling Technology, is financed through the EU Marie Curie funding mechanism. The consortium comprises nine academic partners, four industry partners and two associated partners. Lancaster University leads a work package on the development of diode lasers for environmental applications and contributes to another work package, which is researching quantum dot solar...Read full article

    mode-locked lasers
Mode-locking is a technique used in lasers to produce ultrashort pulses of light with durations on the order of picoseconds, femtoseconds, or even attoseconds. This method synchronizes the phases of different longitudinal modes within the laser cavity, causing them to interfere constructively and generate a train of short pulses. Here is a basic overview of mode-locked operation in a laser: Longitudinal modes: Lasers support different longitudinal modes, each corresponding to a specific...
    quantum dots
A quantum dot is a nanoscale semiconductor structure, typically composed of materials like cadmium selenide or indium arsenide, that exhibits unique quantum mechanical properties. These properties arise from the confinement of electrons within the dot, leading to discrete energy levels, or "quantization" of energy, similar to the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. Quantum dots have a size on the order of a few nanometers and can emit or absorb photons (light) with precise wavelengths,...
