Graphene Optical Modulators Could Speed Communications

BERKELEY, Calif., May 12, 2011 — Digital communications speed limits could soon be broken, thanks to a new graphene-based optical device that could theoretically reach as high as 500 GHz for a single modulator. Xiang Zhang, an engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and a team of researchers built a tiny optical device that uses graphene, a 1-atom-thick layer of crystallized carbon, to switch light on and off.
