A Better Solar-Powered Water Splitter Devised

STANFORD, Calif., June 23, 2011 — To withstand the highly corrosive environment inherent in the process of splitting water, electron-producing silicon-based solar electrodes, which deteriorate almost immediately when exposed to oxygen, are now being coated with an ultrathin layer of titanium dioxide, rendering them durable and efficient for transferring electricity. Conceptually, splitting water could not be simpler. Scientists have long known that applying a voltage across two electrodes submerged in water splits the water molecules into their component elements, oxygen and hydrogen. From an environmental...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
