Hard X-ray Technique Sees Below the Surface

BERKELEY, Calif., Aug. 31, 2011 — A new technique called HARPES (Hard x-ray Angle-resolved PhotoEmission Spectroscopy) can study electronic structures deep below the material surface, including buried layers and interfaces in nanoscale devices. Developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) researchers, the method could pave the way for smaller logic elements in electronics, novel memory architectures in spintronics and more efficient energy conversion in photovoltaic cells. By collecting and comparing HARPES data at room and cryo temperatures, Berkeley Lab researchers could correct for density of...Read full article

    Glossary
    hard x-ray
A type of x-ray that is capable of deep penetration; its wavelength is about 10-8 cm.
    monochromator
A monochromator is an optical instrument used to isolate and select a narrow range of wavelengths from a broader spectrum of light. The term monochromator is derived from "monochromatic," meaning consisting of a single color or wavelength. Monochromators are essential tools in spectroscopy, allowing researchers to analyze the spectral characteristics of light sources or materials. monochromator suppliers → The basic principle of a monochromator involves dispersing incoming light...
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
