LEDs transfer data to mobile devices

BERLIN – Regular LEDs in overhead lighting are being turned into an optical wireless area network that transfers high-speed data from the Internet directly to laptops and other mobile devices – safely and with no loss in quality. Under the European Union’s Omega project, scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) demonstrated visible-light communication (VLC) technology that transfers information wirelessly.     photodiode
    A two-electrode, radiation-sensitive junction formed in a semiconductor material in which the reverse current varies with illumination. Photodiodes are used for the detection of optical power and for the conversion of optical power to electrical power. See avalanche photodiode; PIN photodiode.
