New tissue phantoms help with imaging-device design

A novel combination of additives enables gelatin to acquire optical and acoustical properties that accurately match soft tissue in humans. These tissue mimics, or phantoms, provide an accurate proving ground for new photoacoustic and ultrasonic imaging technologies. Ultrasonic imaging uses high-frequency acoustic pulses to probe the structure of tissues, while photoacoustic imaging uses low-energy laser pulses to create tiny acoustic waves that propagate through tissues. However, certain tissues and materials – fluorescent dyes, blood and nanoparticles used in certain tests –...Read full article

    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    photoacoustic imaging
Abbreviated PAI. An imaging modality with a hybrid technique based on the acoustic detection of optical absorption from endogenous chromophores or exogenous contrast agents. Light is absorbed by the chromophores and converted into transient heating, and through thermoelastic expansion there is a resulting emission of ultrasonic waves. In tissue, ultrasound scatters less than light, therefore PAI generates high-resolution images in the diffusive and optical ballistic regimes compared to purely...
    ultrasonic imaging
The formation and display of three-dimensional images by ultrasonic energy. In one technique, the energy pulses from an ultrasonic transducer scan the object through a liquid medium and, receiving the reflected pulses, analyze them. The recorded data are replayed and displayed on a cathode-ray tube screen, and the image may be viewed from several perspectives.
