Marie Freebody, Contributing Editor, [email protected]

From cancer diagnosis and prognosis to the effects of applying medical leeches, the applications of Maldi imaging are growing. Higher throughput and a wider choice of instruments such as solid-state UV lasers have greatly improved the analytical capabilities of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (Maldi) mass spectrometry (MS). Maldi-MS is making a strong comeback, competing with many applications classically performed by electrospray ionization, especially in terms of analytical speed. In particular, new approaches for absolute quantification are performed better and at...Read full article

    Glossary
    mass spectrometry
An instrumental technique that utilizes the mass-to-charge ratio of charged particles as recorded from a mass spectrometer in order to determine the mass of a particle as well as the chemical makeup, or elemental ionic composition of a given sample or molecule.
    matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization
Process of analysis in which the analyte substance is distributed in a matrix before laser desorption. This method avoids the mass limitations associated with laser desorption and possibly enhances ion formation in the desorbed material.
