RIO Awarded Phase 2 Contract for Space Lidar

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 2, 2012 — Redfern Integrated Optics Inc. (RIO) was awarded a Phase 2 SBIR contract from NASA to further develop its single-frequency narrow-linewidth semiconductor laser technology in the 1064-nm spectral region for space lidar, it announced. RIO’s proprietary external-cavity semiconductor laser is packaged in a standard 14-pin compact butterfly package and produces a single-frequency output with a linewidth less than 2 kHz, ultralow phase and relative intensity noise, and high immunity to vibrations, all under a wide range of operating temperatures. “Our partnership with NASA...Read full article

    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
