Photonic FEL Enables Better Drug Profiling

ENSCHEDE, Netherlands, Dec. 20, 2012 — The combination of a free-electron laser and a photonic crystal enables better “fingerprinting” of a drug than is possible via chemical analysis. A terahertz laser can show the molecular structure of drugs because the beam it produces is at a wavelength suitable for examining molecular and atomic bonds; thus, the laser provides spatial information.
