Liquid Crystal Tied Into Knots to Advance Photonics

COVENTRY, England, Aug. 20, 2013 — Using a miniature Möbius strip made from silica particles, scientists at the University of Warwick have shown how to tie liquid crystals in knots. Researchers hope to harness crystals in the next generation of advanced materials and photonic devices by understanding the intricate configurations and properties of the substance. Liquid crystal knots created around miniature Möbius strip particles (simulation). Different knots are produced by strips with different numbers of twists. The central part of the knot is shown in red around the strip in blue. Examples are shown...Read full article

    colloid
A particle that will not normally diffuse through animal or vegetable membrane. Larger than most inorganic compounds, colloids will remain suspended indefinitely.
    liquid crystal
Liquid crystals are a state of matter that exhibits properties intermediate between those of conventional liquids and solid crystals. In a liquid crystal, the molecules are ordered like those in a crystal, but they can still flow like a liquid. This unique combination of structural order and fluidity gives liquid crystals their distinctive characteristics and makes them valuable in various technological applications, particularly in display technology. Key features and characteristics of...
