Technique Could Simplify Photonic Crystal Formation

A new method could allow scientists to custom-grow defect-free photonic crystals. A team from Princeton University and Columbia University created computer models demonstrating the technique, adding precisely sized chains of polymers to a colloidal suspension. While the creation of solids via colloidal suspension is not a new idea, the researchers said this was the first time the technique has been shown to be viable for creating a crystal pure enough to split light for an optical circuit. Colloids form the initial two layers of a crystal (left). When a third layer is added,...Read full article

    Glossary
    colloid
A particle that will not normally diffuse through animal or vegetable membrane. Larger than most inorganic compounds, colloids will remain suspended indefinitely.
    photonic crystals
Photonic crystals are artificial structures or materials designed to manipulate and control the flow of light in a manner analogous to how semiconductors control the flow of electrons. Photonic crystals are often engineered to have periodic variations in their refractive index, leading to bandgaps that prevent certain wavelengths of light from propagating through the material. These bandgaps are similar in principle to electronic bandgaps in semiconductors. Here are some key points about...
