WASHINGTON, Dec. 11, 2014 — Professor Dr. Peter E. Toschek of the Institute for Laser Physics at Hamberg University in Germany will receive the 2015 Herbert Walther Award from The Optical Society (OSA) and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG). Toschek will be recognized “for his pioneering experiments (in) laser cooling and trapping of single ions and for his contributions to the understanding of the principles of laser spectroscopy, as well as of atomic physics,” according to the organizations. The award will be presented in June at CLEO/Europe-EQEC in Munich. Toschek and associates...Read full article

    laser cooling
A process and method by which manipulation and orientation of a given number of directed laser beams decreases the motion of a group of atoms or molecules such that their internal thermodynamic temperatures reach near absolute zero. The 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Steven Chu, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and William D. Phillips for the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light.
