Defect complexes in nanodiamond particles, which consist of vacancies trapped by nitrogen atoms, form different color centers depending on the nitrogen state present in the diamond. New research into these color centers indicates that nanodiamond particles are ideal for molecular-imaging and cell-labeling bioprobe applications. Nanodiamond (ND) particles have emerged recently as a key platform for many developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology due to their outstanding mechanical performance, biocompatibility and unique optical properties – a combination of assets not often...Read full article

    Glossary
    nitrogen vacancy
A nitrogen vacancy (NV) refers to a specific type of defect or impurity in a crystal lattice where a nitrogen atom replaces a carbon atom adjacent to a vacancy (an empty lattice site) in the diamond crystal structure. The nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond is known for its unique optical and spin properties, making it a key player in various applications, particularly in quantum information processing and sensing. Key points about the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center: Formation: The NV center...
