Light-Sensitive Medium Drives Nanoparticle Assembly

Light has long been used to trigger self-assembly of nanoparticles. A novel approach may be able to achieve the same end more reliably by focusing light on the medium containing the nanoparticles instead of the nanoparticles themselves. The new technique is based on how nanoparticles react when illumination changes the medium's acidity. It could prove useful in applications including drug delivery and reversible writing of information, according to researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Its advantage over other techniques is that the nanoparticles aren't required to...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
