Analog Devices Acquires Laser Technology from Vescent

NORWOOD, Mass., Dec. 2, 2016 — Semiconductor manufacturer Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) has acquired a solid-state laser beam steering technology from electro-optic technology developer Vescent Photonics Inc. to enable the mainstream adoption of auto lidar systems. Vescent’s nonmechanical beam steering technology enables more robust, integrated lidar systems that overcome drawbacks of bulky offerings such as reliability, size and cost. The acquisition aims to strengthen ADI’s position in the automotive safety system market. “From inertial MEMS sensors used in airbag and electronic stability...Read full article

    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
