Nomarski microscopy: Also referred to as differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy; Nomarski microscopy is a unique form of microscopy especially suited for the evaluation of surface quality and defects as well as enhancing the contrast in unstained, transparent samples. The Nomarski illumination method incorporates polarization and phase shift techniques that cause minute departures of the surface from a perfect plane to appear as different colors that are then observed and characterized by the viewer.
