confocal resonator

A type of optical resonator that uses two facing spherical mirrors whose focal lengths are the same and whose foci coincide. Since the focal length of a spherical mirror is one-half its radius of curvature, the mirrors are separated by a distance equal to their common radius of curvature. This sort of resonator has an axis determined by the line that joins the two centers of curvature of the two mirrors. It also has a set of resonant modes in which the light forms a narrow beam along the axis.
