diopter movement

The adjustment of the eyepiece of an instrument to provide accommodation for the eyesight differences of individual observers. The axial distance through which the eyepiece must be moved, to provide a convergence or divergence of one diopter, is calculated from the focal length of the eyepiece. One diopter (D) = F2/1000 where F = eyepiece effective focal length (EFL) in mm.
