error function

A single number, defined by the computer program or the user that expresses the performance of an optical system. Also known as merit function and defect function, the error function comprises several weighted target values that represent characteristics of a given optical system such as aberrations, magnification, image conjugate locations, etc. These terms are typically squared and summed to compute a single numerical value of the error function. The smaller this value the better the optical system.
