junction diode: A semiconductor device with the property of conducting current more easily in one direction than the other. It has two terminals containing a single crystal of semiconducting material that ranges from P-type at one terminal to N-type at the other. It has found wide use as a rectifier and is a basic element of the injection laser. When fabricated in suitable geometric form, it can be used as a solar cell to convert visible radiant energy into electrical energy.
