microchannel plate (MCP)

A device used as an electron multiplier when photons at the ultraviolet and x-ray wavelength are incident upon it. Resembling a thin fiber optic faceplate, the MCP has the interior surface of each hollow fiber coated to produce substantial electron amplification over its length. As a photon strikes the first surface on the MCP, it is converted into an electron. This electron then strikes a secondary surface knocking free several more electrons, which then strike a third surface eventually generating a cascade of thousands of photons that emerge from the rear of the MCP amplifying the input signal.
