phase-modulated sensor

A type of sensor used in interferometers to compare the phase of light detected by a sensing fiber with that of a reference fiber. The two single-mode fibers are illuminated by the same coherent laser and are in phase; changes in the environment of the sensing fiber result in a phase shift, which can then be measured with great accuracy.
