three-level laser

A laser having a material, such as ruby, that has an energy state structure of three levels: the ground state (1) wherein excitation applied to the material raises ions in the material into the broadband level (2) from which the ions spontaneously transfer to a lower, densely occupied level (3) emission of radiation (fluorescence) indicates the spontaneous return to ground level.
