cascade shower

A shower of cosmic rays whereby a high-energy electron produces one or more photons that convert into electron pairs, the secondary electrons producing the same effects as the primary. As the process continues, the number of particles grows and the shower builds up until the energy level is so low that photon emission and pair production cannot take place any longer.
