entrance slit

A thin slit in an opaque screen by which light enters a spectrometer. The spectrum thus formed is the image of this slit in each wavelength of light present. Since the slit must be narrow enough for good resolution and yet wide enough to allow a suitable amount of radiation to enter, the slit width must be carefully calculated.
