fiber-based confocal luminescence microscope

A microscope in which laser light is delivered through single-mode fibers that replace the pinhole usually used in confocal microscopy. When the Gaussian mode is imaged from the fiber output onto the sample, the diffraction-limited focal spot can be moved relative to the sample by moving the sample or the microscope head. For collection of the reflected or emitted light, the light can be coupled back into the same fiber and separated from the excitation light at the other end of the fiber using a beamsplitter, or the light can be coupled into another fiber.
