macula lutea

The small central portion of the human retina that is responsible for providing the clearest, and most distinct aspects of human vision. Light from an object directly forms an image on the macula which has a distinct ratio of cones to rods. The center region of the macula contains all cones; this is the fovea. The fovea is the point of most critica lhigh-resolution visual acuity. The macula/fovea area is the main portion of the retina used for color discrimination.
