magnetorheological finishing (MRF)

A method of deterministically polishing high-quality optical surfaces by applying a magnetic force to a fluidlike suspension of magnetic particles. The surface finish pattern for the part is predetermined by computer-controlled magnetorheological (MR) finishing slurry. The magnetic fluid acts as a polish whose shape and stiffness can be controlled magnetically when an external magnetic field is applied and guided by computer algorithms that map the material removal across the piece for its final surface finish.
