modulator crystal

A nonlinear crystal used to modulate a polarized beam of light by means of the Pockels effect. A Pockels cell is used as a voltage-controlled waveplate by means of applying a known voltage across the cell. This voltage induces a known phase delay in the electric field passing through it which then results in a controlled method for modulating the polarization of the input optical field. For a given linear input polarization, the output polarization will in general be elliptical.
