ophthalmic instruments

A family of specialized instruments used by ophthalmologists and optometrists to study a patient's eyes and prescribe spectacles. It includes the ophthalmoscope to observe and photograph the retina; the retinoscope and optometer to determine the refractive errors of the eye; the ophthalmometer (keratometer) to determine the radius of curvature of the cornea; the perimeter (campimeter) to plot out the patient's visual field in terms of angles in the object space; the slit lamp and corneal microscope to observe small regions of the cornea that may be opaque or that may scatter light.
