optoisolator

An optical coupling device that uses light to bridge the gap between incompatible wire communications systems. It contains an input amplifier, a light-emitting diode, a photodiode and an output amplifier. Also known as an optical coupler, an optocoupler, an optical isolator, an optically coupled isolator, an optoelectronic isolator, a photocoupler and a photoisolator. In most electrical communication systems, optoisolators are used to prevent high voltage source signals from harming the circuitry in the system that receives the signal.
